Shoofly Pie, constructed in 2019, is a 6,000 SF mixed-use live-work space in the Baca Railyard. The lower level houses two business spaces with two residential units on the upper levels. The project is a site- and user-specific exploration of the live/work paradigm. Designed and developed by its occupants, it is also a design-build project shaped by the tight economic constraints set by the lending agency.

The building reflects a simple diagram: a rectangular steel structure containing one commercial story topped with two wood-framed second-floor residential units. The commercial steel-clad volume adjoins and engages the street edge. The building’s framing system allows for maximum flexibility in accommodating future tenant needs.

The masses of the upstairs residential units are pulled apart from each other, articulating a pattern of urban living in which privacy is equally important for both interior and exterior space.

Each residence is laid out to emphasize the axial crossing of light, views, and natural ventilation. At the heart of the design was the desire to create a vessel of light to live within.
