Maui, HI (unbuilt)
“perché appressando sé al suo disire, nostro intelletto si profonda tanto…”
“Because in drawing near to its desire
Our intellect engulfs itself so far,
That after it the memory cannot go.”
(from Dante’s Paradiso)
This design is a contemporary interpretation of a tropical ocean villa that is reminiscent of a ‘classic modern’ house. It evolved through a study of the pattern of natural light within the space and the interaction of sky, water and built form to capture a luminosity within the spaces with just enough shade and shadow to mark the passage of the sun. The use of wood on the mauka (mountain) side of the house transitions to a white plaster finish on the makai (ocean) side. The house has four generous sized bedrooms and a private ohana.
