The new 54,000sf museum will complete the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s intimate campus in downtown Santa Fe. The design of the new building evolved through an understanding of place, adjacent context, and zoning codes, as well as through a study of Miss O’Keeffe’s life, her art, and her depiction of form and mass within her paintings.
The geomorphic adobe forms and buttresses of the project are scaled to sit harmoniously within the context of adjacent buildings, and will add to downtown Santa Fe’s unique sense of place. The building is intentionally pulled back from the existing property lines to widen the adjacent sidewalks and the adjacent alleyway to provide urban amenity, and to support all of the diverse events and activities that downtown Santa Fe is famous for.
In addition to gallery spaces, the new Museum will also have a basement with collections storage and staff work areas, an education and multipurpose wing, and a gift store. The existing Georgia O’Keeffe Museum will remain open to visitors until the new building is open. Construction is due to begin in summer of 2024.
